On Gladiator's Wings

Gloster Gladiator II

Painted as a commission, this shows the ‘Fighter Collection' Gladiator wheeling and turning around a cloud filled sky.

The Gladiator was the last biplane frontline fighter to be flown by the RAF, and shows just how far the aeroplane could go as a fighting machine with two sets of wings.

Looking closely at this machine for the first time at Duxford England, I was struck how visible and accessible the engineering and structure is. Most of all, when considering the next generation of fighters to serve the RAF, how much the Hurricane shows it's similarities to the Gladiator, whereas the Spitfire was a much bigger step forward.
